What Does IPX7 Actually Mean? A No-BS Guide to Waterproof Ratings

Somewhere between "I dropped my phone in the toilet" and "I want to use this vibrator in the shower," you've probably encountered the term IPX7. Maybe on a product page. Maybe in a review. Maybe whispered by someone at a party who seemed way too confident about waterproof ratings.
And you nodded, because what else do you do when someone says "IPX7" like it's common knowledge?
Here's the thing: waterproof ratings actually matter. Not in a "fun trivia" way. In a "this determines whether your $80 purchase survives its first shower" way. And the rating system, while not complicated, is almost never explained properly by the companies selling you these products.
So let's fix that.
The IP Rating System: Where It Comes From
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It's an international standard (IEC 60529, if you want to impress someone at that same party) maintained by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The system was designed to give consumers a clear, standardized way to understand how well an electronic device is protected against solids and liquids.
The rating always follows the same format: IP + two digits.
- First digit (0-6): Protection against solid objects. 0 means no protection. 6 means completely dust-tight.
- Second digit (0-9): Protection against water. 0 means no protection. 9 means it can survive high-pressure, high-temperature water jets.
When you see an X in place of a digit - like IPX7 - it means that particular protection type wasn't tested. IPX7 tells you the water protection level (7) but says nothing about dust protection. The device might be dust-proof. It might not be. They just didn't test for it.

Breaking Down the Water Protection Levels
Here's every water protection rating, from "hopes and prayers" to "basically a submarine."
IPX0 - No Protection
Not tested against water at all. Keep it dry. Keep it far from your bathroom. Probably keep it in a different zip code from your shower.
IPX1 - Dripping Water
Survives vertical drips. Picture a single tear falling on the device. That's the test. Not exactly confidence-inspiring for anything involving a faucet.
IPX2 - Dripping Water at an Angle
Same as IPX1, but the device is tilted up to 15 degrees. Progress, technically.
IPX3 - Spraying Water
Handles water sprayed at up to 60 degrees from vertical. Rain-resistant. Not shower-ready. This is the "you can use it near the pool but not in the pool" rating.
IPX4 - Splashing Water
Survives splashes from any direction. A lot of "water-resistant" products live here. You could use something rated IPX4 near the bathtub. In the bathtub? That's a gamble, and the house usually wins.
IPX5 - Water Jets
Withstands sustained, low-pressure water jets from any angle. We're getting closer to shower territory, but this rating is tested with a 6.3mm nozzle at a specific pressure. Your shower head might exceed that.
IPX6 - Powerful Water Jets
Handles high-pressure jets from any direction. This is where most people would feel comfortable using something in the shower. And most people would be mostly right.
IPX7 - Immersion Up to 1 Meter
Here's the star of the show. IPX7 means the device was submerged in water up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) deep for 30 minutes and continued to function. That's not a splash. That's not a jet of water. That's being underwater.
According to testing standards published by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), IPX7 testing involves complete submersion under controlled conditions. The device must show no harmful water ingress after the test.
IPX8 - Continuous Immersion Beyond 1 Meter
Deeper and longer than IPX7, with specific conditions defined by the manufacturer. This is dive-watch territory.
IPX9 - High-Pressure, High-Temperature Jets
Industrial-grade. If your personal care products need this rating, you have questions that this blog cannot answer.
Why IPX7 Is the Sweet Spot for Shower Use
Think about what actually happens in a shower. Water hits the device from multiple angles. Steam fills the space. The device might sit in a puddle on a shower shelf. Occasionally it might slip from your hands and land in standing water at the bottom of the tub.
IPX7 handles all of that. If something survives being submerged for 30 minutes, it can handle shower spray, steam, and the occasional fumble into a few inches of bathwater.
IPX6 would probably be fine for shower spray alone, but it doesn't account for accidental submersion. And IPX5? That's tested with a specific nozzle at a specific distance. Your rainfall shower head with eight spray settings is not that nozzle.
IPX7 gives you genuine peace of mind in wet environments, and it's the rating you'll see on most quality waterproof products designed for bathroom use.
What IPX7 Does NOT Mean
This is where manufacturers get a little loose with the truth, and where you need to be a slightly skeptical consumer.
It doesn't mean "use it in a hot tub"
IPX7 is tested in still, room-temperature water. A hot tub has heat, chemicals (chlorine, bromine), and jets. Heat can warp seals over time. Chemicals can degrade silicone and rubber. Jets create pressure that IPX7 wasn't designed to handle during submersion. Will it survive one hot tub session? Maybe. Will it survive a season of them? The odds are not in your favor.
It doesn't mean the charging port is waterproof
Many waterproof devices have magnetic or pin-style charging ports. The device is waterproof when those ports are sealed. If there's a rubber flap covering a USB port, that flap needs to be fully closed and sealed for the rating to apply. A charging port with water in it is a short circuit waiting to happen.
It doesn't mean waterproof forever
Seals degrade. O-rings wear out. Silicone ages. A device that was IPX7 when it left the factory may not be IPX7 after two years of regular use, especially if it's been dropped or the seals have been stressed. This is why proper care matters. How to Check a Product's Actual Rating
Here's a fun exercise: go to any product page for a "waterproof" vibrator or personal massager. Search for the actual IP rating. You'll find one of three things:
- A specific IP rating is listed - usually IPX7 or IPX6. Good. This means the manufacturer submitted the product for standardized testing.
- The word "waterproof" with no rating - this is marketing, not engineering. "Waterproof" without an IP rating is like "nearby" without a distance. It could mean anything.
- "Water-resistant" - this typically means IPX4 or lower, and the manufacturer is being honest about it. Respect the honesty, but don't bring it in the shower.

IPX7 means "tested to survive submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes." That's the whole story. Everything else - can I use it in the shower, the bath, the pool, the ocean during a monsoon - is just context applied to that one fact.
For shower use? IPX7 is the standard you want. It gives you a comfortable margin above what a shower actually subjects a device to. IPX6 is workable. IPX5 is a maybe. Anything below that, keep it in the bedroom.
And "waterproof" without a number? That's a red flag with good marketing.
