Water-based lube is the safe universal choice — compatible with all toy materials, washes off easily, and is fine in water (reapply as needed since water dilutes it). Silicone lube lasts longer and is great for shower use, but cannot be used with silicone toys — it degrades the surface. If you have a silicone toy, use water-based lube. When in doubt, water-based.
